In the heart of the Little Rann of Kutch exists the huge industry of salt making. Fields of white salt cover the surface. Salt making has been the occupation of the people residing here and their forefathers since 600 years. However the poor economic conditions and the crudity of the occupation has deprived them of their health and proper well being. The salt production here accounts for nearly 30% of the entire nation’s salt. Yet these people are paid in meager. The reason being that they are not equipped with the marketing skills as they haven’t got proper education and training. Being economically deprived they also face it’s consequent issues such as poor food, health and sanitation facilities.
Each of us use a minimum of 2 teaspoons of salt everyday. However the very people who are responsible of making salt manage to get only one square meal daily. The area under Little Rann of Kutch is also one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in India, spanning some 4950 sq ft in area. Wild Ass or the commonly called ghudkars reside along with the salt pan workers here. There is a dire need to raise awareness regarding their ways of living and initiating development in their standards of living. I took this up as my primary concern for my Studio Project One in semester two. Under the guidance of my professor Chakradhar Saswade I decided to work towards the betterment of the agariyas (salt pan workers) in the area of Little Rann of Kutch.
